Four years on…

I was thinking about writing a post on the Olympics until I realised I did that four years ago.

Here, and here.

Only the city has changed, really.

And last night I watched handball.

I was fortunate to be home yesterday afternoon and watch the Brazil v Russia Men’s Volleyball pool match.

It was a 4 set epic of a quality I have never seen before. Normally the point is won or lost on the first attack but there were multiple rallies that got over 5 attacks and one even got to 7.

They also seem to miss a lot of serves as they go hell for leather on the jump serve. I was always of the opinion that a missed serve you might as well just roll the ball under the net to give it back and even a lolly serve that went in was better. At least you are a chance to block the attack but a missed server means the point is over without a chance of winning.

    I know…

There’s no excuse for missing a serve and I think jump serves are overrated. Sure, they can be fast and hard but topspin is a cinch to read and easy enough to control if you’re in position. I realise at Olympic level, they’re going to be fucking fast and fucking hard but I agree, I don’t think it’s worth the high rate of error.

And these days, you give away a point, when in our day you’d just lose the serve.

My wobbly serve has served me well over the years using the weight of the valve to cause the ball to move in the air. My dream serve was a serve down the line with the valve positioned to make the ball land out. The receiver would read the direction of the ball and let it go.

However, my cunning plan was to put the slightest spin on the ball, so it would do a half-rotation, mid-flight and, with the valve now coming around to the ‘in’ side of the line, start moving the other way and land slightly in, or on, the line.

It only actually ever worked precisely as described once. But you should have seen the look on the guy’s face. Totally worth it.

Wobbly serve FTW!! I used to like to hit on the valve or with the valve up. Only needed the normal variation at contact to get some decent movement.

Even the very best struggle when it moves in the last meter.

I wonder how I would go under the current rules but back in my prime. I reckon I might have gone alright as a libero.
