Good grief

So I’ve been on hiatus for a few weeks and much has happened. Some famous people have died, which must be awful for them and their families, especially where young children are involved but, for the rest of us, give me a break.

Of course, the media love it when famous people die. They spend a lot of time behind the scenes, compiling obituaries while famous people are still alive, and when they die it’s payoff time. They get to show all that slo-mo footage with Wind Beneath my Wings playing over the top. And yesterday, there was a public service. We got to hear the PM talk about mateship and now we’re all ga ga because a cute little girl said lots of *inspiring* things.

C put it well last night when they were showing the funeral highlights on teev. She said ‘imagine being the grieving widow, having to sit through all this’. Yep, she’s trying to hold back tears and there are a dozen cameras going in for close-ups just so the public can feel as though they’re somehow a part of her grief.

Yes, grief is something that can be broadcast. Live grief in HD digital quality. I’m sure there’s plenty of grief you can even download. The media have commodotised grief so we can all get feel privileged that we own our own little piece of that family’s sadness. Lucky us. Without the media, the family might have been left alone to cope with their grief. Aren’t they lucky they get to live up to the public’s expectations. What good Australians. What brave souls. It makes me shed a tear…
Hey look! The blue Wiggle!
