It’s satire, geddit?

Back in 2003, there was a furore in the US, after Vanity Fair Magazine posted an article titled “Ask Dame Edna“. It contained fictional questions and the character’s answers to them. One question asked “Should I learn” Spanish?”. The Dame’s answer was “Don’t bother, why would you want to have a conversation with the help?” [...]

The ABC of Advertising

I happened to be in the car at around 6.45 this morning and the radio was tuned to ABC local (891). The hosts were talking with a representative of a leading telco regarding mobile phone reception, specifically in the Adelaide Hills area. He was explaining that the CDMA network was being phased out soon and [...]

Disappointing

Phillip Adams, in his column in The Weekend Australian Magazine on Saturday, used the expression ‘comprised of’. And I thought he was so intellectual.

Am I first?

I know there will be (and probably already has been – I’ve been a little slow on the uptake of late) a lot of opinionating and joke-making about the foiled car bombs in London recently. (And it okay to make jokes because no one died). Now, because it was allegedly doctors behind the bombs, can [...]

/whois

While I’m not completely ignorant to the goings-on of some personalities as reported in the tabloid press, can someone tell me, because I actually have no idea… Who’s Lindsay Lohan?

It was a very imaginitive journalist/social commentator that coined the label ‘Generation Y’. A few days ago, I first heard mention of ‘Generation Z’. Sorry, who’s writing this?

Sorry. I still don’t get it

I was up well before dawn on Anzac day. Though that has more to do with being a parent of small children than it does with any kind of duty on my part to observe the significance of our public holidays. (I wrote about a similar occasion here.) We did have the TV on for [...]

Falling over

As part of a big cleanup at home, I’m going through my old video cassettes and transferring anything I want to keep to DVD. It’s time consuming and therefore pretty slow going but it’s not entirely unpleasurable, as it means I get to watch a lot of stuff I obviously taped in the first place [...]

Vonnegut is dead… and so it goes

A good obit here Go and buy one of his books NOW!

Hey, Jack.

I just finished reading On the Road and what a fucking ride it is. I hated it for the first three quarters, thinking ‘what the fuck are you doing?’ but then I started to get the rhythm and sheer poetry of it. Now I have to read another 70 short stories, only ten of which [...]
